The Rittenhouse Verdict and the Question of Nuance

Fanon had written that the colonized belonged to a higher cognitive category than the colonizer for a simple reason: The colonized have to be able to think of themselves and their masters as human whereas the colonizer thinks of his subjects as merely “things” or chattel. I have thought about…

Nazi References: Please Recall What Happened to the Nazis and Their Country!

I still remember reading about comments that pop-star Justin Bieber made when visiting Anne Frank House in Amsterdam- he said he hoped she would “have been a Belieber,” referring to the set of groupies and fans who adored him. I recall being floored by the comment- so callous and so…

Please Pay for Great Content

Six years ago, I wrote an article that appeared on Countercurrents, just as this one does. The piece was strident, even didactic, but was in large part a plea. The notion was to explain why the pathology of “free content” creates a race to the bottom in journalism. …

Out-Lyfted

When I touched down at Denver airport, the fun began. As it was, I was getting in quite late and had a 90-minute-plus drive ahead of me to Colorado Springs. Conferences are back! …

Bagration: Saving Europe Twice

Some years ago I had drinks with 4 acquaintances. All of these fellows claimed they loved to read about history and to a one, suggested that World War 2 was their area of expertise. A drink in, I started to hold forth on the Soviet contribution to the war and…

Joy Sparked

About a year ago, someone gave me a copy of Marie Kondo’s “Spark Joy.” I had heard of the book but was uninterested in it. It lay around my office, sometimes on my desk, sometimes on the floor. A few times I tripped over it. I ignored it for months. Just last week I took it to half-price books. I think I got $1.25 –it was a pristine, untouched copy after all. I was so happy to get rid of it. No more tripping over its carcass, no more of my office real estate occupied.

Falling Off a Cliff

It gives me no pleasure to quote Cromwell, but so apposite was his dismissal of the Rump Parliament in 1653 as it relates to Trump and his cronies today- You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately … Depart, I say; and let us have…

De-housed for me

You did not know did you? That my house gives me rights. You did not know did you? That my house gives me virtue. Food, Clothing, Shelter I demand that you are not naked But not full or warm I won’t offer you sleep Not on my lawn Or even in a park Not here, I say Brooms and authorities both sweep The dust, the garbage. My TV blares I sing with Alexa I have a house You stay quiet What you know That I will not see

Herd Insanity

The American Pageant has become a Greek Tragedy. The outcomes in America are always clear and predictable. Nothing has brought that into bolder relief than the Covid-19 Pandemic and Americans’ response to it. From the beginning, we knew it would get out of control in the US. A population for…

Keep it HOT and DON’T Move On

With the recent Democratic win in the US election, all sorts of people have been calling for a “lowering of the temperature,” “coming together,” and “forgiving and forgetting.” “Let’s heal,” they say and “move forward.” “Now,” they say, “is not the time for politics.” Notoriously- and righteously- missing from this…
